I love finding games that may have missed out on the mainstream and you can grab them a silly prices.
Metro 2033 is one of those. It only cost £9 on eBay and it was a good investment. I had seen some reviews previously and thought that i would look into it. It just so happened that one did pop up on ‘items recommended for me’.
Good work eBay.
It is a stunner of a game. The best overall description is a mixture of Fallout and Call of Duty.
The game is set in Moscow after a Nuclear apocalypse (nothing new there) but the interesting thing is that it is all sent in the Metro system under the city. Which is how people survived and have continued to exist after the fallout.
You are given a quest by a family friend and feel obliged to assist. So you set off on your travels and try to get to your destination. You battle ferocious mutants and fight psychological issues to achieve your goals.
Although a little linear, there is a great range of characters that partner up with to help you on your quest. And they really do offer a sense of camaraderie as you battle through the darkness of the tunnels.
You also venture to the surface, where you need to use a gas mask to survive, where the mask can break and filters run out. All of this adds to the feeling of tension and suspense.
In a level there are probably only about 2-3 full on fights, but that is enough. Ammo is scarce and under powered and the enemies are relentless so you really have to fight for your survival.
There are also bandits that offer a more mentally challenging battle experience. Where you need to favour the shadows and you need to get up close and personal to make it through.
I won’t give away too more of the story as I fully recommend you play through it and enjoy it.
It is a great idea and a well executed game. So if you have a spare tenner and an empty weekend, this is a worthy investment.
