Resident Evil Retribution Review

Oh dear.

What can I say? I saw the full trailer last night at the cinema and I already hate it.
It’s gone from different take-kind of on track-no relevance, non scary, high budget crap.

The movie franchise for Resident Evil could have been something amazing, maybe some kind of low budget labour of love like 28 Days later. All set in a mansion, with the tension being in the mystery of the situation and affection for the characters.

But no.

Apparently, making a superhuman main character and a weird side array of non-characters seemed like the best way to go.

After a few films, it has gone from an apocalypse, to the whole world being wiped out in a desert, to then for no reason being in a sprawling metropolis again with human everywhere. It just doesn’t make sense. And now they realise that they have either killed off all of the human characters or never included them, they thought how can we fix this? So now Alice has cloned some of the original team mates (a poor choice as they have already failed to survive once) and also Leon and Barry from the series.
So the trailer shows them driving around in a high power sports car and generally shooting stuff again. No tension, no fear, no survival. Just a mundane series of events leading to some kind of ending allowing more to be made.

Oh and they are still overlooking the fact that in the third instalment the world is a desert, there is no water or human life then the end of the fourth shows there aer actually cities and armys all over the place.

Awesome.

So as you can see I am not a fan of the film adaptations. But they are worth a mention as I am sure it isn’t a coincidence that it is coming out near the 6th game.

Which by the way, looks awesome.

Assassins Creed 3 – Naval warfare

Published on August 15, 2012 by in Reviews

As we get closer and closer to the release date it is getting more exciting.

Revalations saw the introduction of the, well mini game, that was defending the towers. Even thought I only had to do it once after the tutorial it was still a bit lack luster when it came to excitement. With pretty much infinite funds it would be pretty hard to fail.

However, for ACIII they have added a whole new element in the form of a naval warfare segement. Where you assume command of a ship and have to take on the enemy fleet.

The Assassin ship takes aim

It even looks brutal with still imagery

The action still involves a simple ‘kill the two targets mission,’ with the added bonus that those two targets are now warships. Along with boarding and other cool maneuvers it promises to be a great addition to the franchise. And I for one, am looking forward to it.

All Aboard!

Ada Wong – Resident Evil 6 heroine

Yes! Ada Wong has been confirmed to have her own campaign.

She is a mysterious character in a mysterious game. And is one of only a handful of side characters that I actually care about, ever since she came onto the franchise back in Resident Evil 2.

She will not only be a side character in the upcoming Resident Evil6, but she will be the main character.

She did have the spotlight back in Resident Evil 4, but it did need refining as it really gave the impression that they had some spare code for the game and replaced Leon with Ada.

So hopefully this is the real deal, a full immersive campaign, that will give away a few more details of this complex character.

Resident Evil 6 Premium Edition

It seems I missed a trick when I said that the Resident Evil 6 collector’s edition was over priced. It has been cleverly outshone by offering the Premium Edition! At a mere $1,302 you could be the proud owner of a replica of Leon Kennedy’s leather jacket and a few more artefacts. Now I do have a couple of gaming shirts, but 1. They are brand names, Etnies and Fenchurch (Skate and Mirrors Edge respectively) and 2. They were free.

This is 1. Ill fitting and strangely shiny and 2. Equivalent to a flat deposit.

Alternatively, you could buy the cow make the jacket yourself and then you would still have some meat to eat.

Which is a much more sound investment.

Apparently there is a recession on somewhere, obviously not near Capcoms offices.

Assassin’s Creed 3

Published on July 12, 2012 by in Guides, Reviews

Assassins Creed 3I have always been a fan of this series. There is nothing more satisfying that getting a perfect free-run going then with immaculate timing taking out your target and then disappearing as quickly as you left. To be fair that didn’t happen often but when it did, it was very good.

Revelations was the last in the series. To be fair it was a great game. I didn’t give in the credit it was due, but when I got into it I was hooked again as had happened before. I have a soft spot for Ezio, they really have developed him a character flawlessly. From rebellious youth to confident leader, it was a great journey.

Driver: San Francisco

What a game. Another gem, that came from my love of muscle cars. Having a lazy afternoon I decided to treat myself. I had mixed feelings as to whether it would be any good. One of the main features was that the hero, John Tanner, is in a coma is you can float above cars and jump in and out of any vehicle and it all seemed a bit blahhh.

Well as usual I was wrong.

What I was rewarded with was a seamless and perfectly formed driving game. What they have done here is look back to what the game is about. It is about a driver who drives, so my god they made on hell of a driving game. One of the main elements being that they also have the rights to over 100 real life brands and models, meaning that yes, you can tear up the streets in a Zonda or a Mclaren F1; all with immaculate graphics, gameplay or cutscene. But that isn’t even where the fun is.

Black Ops II soundtrack to be created by Trent Reznor

Black Ops II just got a little nicer for me today. I found out (a little delayed) that the soundtrack is going to be a custom creation from Trent Reznor.

Now, for the few of you who don’t know who he is, he is the musical genius behind Nine Inch Nails. And for the even fewer of you that haven’t heard of them, check them out!

He is a brilliant composer, and is such a perfectionist that I know he will not let that soundtrack out of his studio until it is 110% perfect.

If I could pick a soundtrack to run and gun down the street too, Nine Inch Nails would be well up there. So I have no doubt that he will get the adrenaline coursing through the veins without a problem.

Exciting times.

Are the HD Remakes here for good?

Published on July 5, 2012 by in Reviews

I hope so. Nostalgia of this kind is hard to come by. Resident Evil was remade on the Gamecube and boy did it make a difference, it really was awesome.

Now with the growing popularity of downloading games, and getting more for your money (although that has always been a priority) the revival of the classics has a really good place in the market. With Silent Hill HD collection, Splinter Cell HD and the like the old school is becoming new school. Plus with a price tag below the £15 mark it really is great value. As the classics had great stories, characters and game play, they just lacked the visual. Now they have been given that, new cut scenes and better game play and the cost has come down.

Fantastic news.

There is a great satisfaction with remakes; it is like you have been there before. You will get to a bit and remember where a secret is that took you a month to find on the original. And that doesn’t make it pointless; it makes you realize how far it has come. When you have flashbacks to a frustrating time where the zombie kept getting you from the wardrobe, and this time you come in with the shotgun raised, it is satisfaction guaranteed.

Metro 2033 Review

I love finding games that may have missed out on the mainstream and you can grab them a silly prices.

Metro 2033 is one of those. It only cost £9 on eBay and it was a good investment. I had seen some reviews previously and thought that i would look into it. It just so happened that one did pop up on ‘items recommended for me’.

Good work eBay.

It is a stunner of a game. The best overall description is a mixture of Fallout and Call of Duty.
